How is advertising performence measured, both online and offline?

Online the measurements can be $ spent for hits per day versus orders. Hits per day vs. $ volume. The standards are still evolving – almost as fast as website rankings and server fees.
Offline you can use more traditional counters such as $ per items sold of items advertised / $ profit vs. $ cost ROI.
In advertising, one key is knowing your purpose: name ident./new customers/bring back existing customers (far cheaper than converting a new customer)/ selling a particular high profit item.
When you know your purpose, then you can set up your counters or pointers to measure accordingly.
